The short version
WinSend transfers files and local clipboard content directly over your local network. Optional Cloud Sync relays clipboard text encrypted on your devices. Cloud connection metadata and usage/purchase analytics are processed separately from transfer content.
- Clipboard text is not sent as an analytics payload. Cloud Sync sends encrypted text through the relay when enabled.
- File contents and full file names are not included in the intended analytics payloads. Local diagnostic logs may contain file names or clipboard previews; review logs before sharing them.
- No WinSend account is required for transfer. If you contact support or submit a survey, we receive the information you choose to provide.
- We collect pseudonymous usage analytics (described below) to improve the product and diagnose connection issues
What we collect
App analytics (iOS and Windows apps)
To understand how the app is used and to diagnose connection failures, the apps send pseudonymous usage events to our analytics provider:
- Persistent analytics identifiers: Windows uses an installation identifier; iOS uses an identifier for the vendor. Events can also include hashed pairing-link identifiers, a RevenueCat user identifier and Pro status. These allow activity to be associated over time; they are not a guarantee of complete anonymity.
- Device name, operating system, and app version
- Usage events: app start, device discovery and connection attempts/results, feature usage counts (e.g. refresh, update check), and error events
- Transfer metadata: size, duration, file type, item counts, direction, transport, trigger, and success/failure information, rather than file contents or full file names
- Network diagnostics: your /24 network segment (e.g. 192.168.8.0/24, never your full IP address), network profile type (public/private), and whether a firewall rule for the app exists — used solely to diagnose "can't connect" problems
Website analytics (winsend.app)
Page views, download button clicks, and web performance metrics (Web Vitals), collected with a persistent pseudonymous visitor ID; page URL, referrer and campaign data can associate visits over time.
Surveys
If you voluntarily submit an in-app survey, we receive the answers you provide.
How we use the data
- Measure feature usage and improve the product
- Diagnose connection and installation failures (e.g. firewall or router issues)
- Produce aggregate statistics (e.g. how many devices connected successfully)
We do not sell your data, and we do not use it for advertising.
Third-party processor
Analytics events are processed by PostHog, Inc. (cloud analytics, hosted in the United States). PostHog acts as our data processor and receives the events described above together with the IP address inherent in any HTTPS request. See the PostHog Privacy Policy.
Local transfer content goes directly between devices. Optional cloud clipboard sends client-encrypted text through the relay; connection requests disclose IP addresses and protocol metadata such as device identifiers/names, group identifiers and join credentials. Transfer content is not an intended PostHog analytics payload. Apple and RevenueCat process purchases and entitlement checks; purchase analytics may include product, price, transaction and entitlement identifiers. Data retention and deletion
Resetting a local identifier or uninstalling the app does not itself delete previously transmitted analytics or purchase records. Contact us to request deletion and, if possible, provide the relevant installation or purchase identifier without sharing your sync code or transfer content. Server-side retention periods and deletion must be handled by the relevant service; this page does not promise that relay metadata or analytics are never retained.
Children
WinSend is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated effective date.
